I've spent my career building and leading production software where failure isn't an option: power-grid systems for the energy industry, logistics tools at one of the country's largest freight companies, clinical software for hospitals, and international tax platforms — a career that runs from developer to Director of Software.
Along the way I noticed something: the businesses that could benefit most from that caliber of engineering — the shops, services, and firms that keep a city running — usually get the worst of it. Template sites. Agency runarounds. Software "solutions" that solve the vendor's problem.

- Plain English, always. If I can't explain the plan without jargon, the plan isn't ready.

- Build boring, build solid. Proven technology, monitored and backed up, cheap to run for years.
- Tell the truth about scope. Including "you don't need this" — the cheapest sentence in software.
